Former X Files star Gillian Anderson says that she feels no shame and wishes to be open about her history and the lesbian love affair she had as a teen.
Gillian, 46, had spoken about her previously back in 2012 to Out magazine when she said she was: “in a relationship with a girl for a long time when I was in high school”.
She has now elaborated further, highlighting that it was more than just a passing schoolyard phase.
In an interview with Even magazine in the Mail on Sunday, said that she wanted to honour the memory of her unnamed former girlfriend who passed away of a brain tumour.
“She had died of a brain tumour a year earlier and I had never really spoken about her.
“She was a beautiful person who was very meaningful in my life and I wanted to honour her instead of hiding my experience.
“There was a point years after we split when she phoned to tell me to say she had been offered a large amount of money to sell a photograph of us together and had chosen not to do it.”
Gillian has since had long-term relationships with men, including Canadian TV director Clyde Klotz – from 1994-1997, with whom she had a daughter Piper Maru. She was then married to documentarian Julian Ozanne for two years before parting ways in 2006. More recently, she split with her partner of six years Mark Griffiths, in 2012 after having had two sons with him – Oscar and Felix.
In her 2012 Out magazine interview, Gillian said despite her lesbian experience, she was still far more attracted to men: “If I had thought I was 100% gay, would it have been a different experience for me?”
“Would it have been a bigger deal if shame had been attached to it and all those things that become huge life-altering issues for youngsters in that situation?”
Gillian also admitted that while she now felt more attracted to men, she did still experiment with women occasionally.
Now though, it seems that Gillian wants to honour the memory of her former lover as more than just a passing fancy.
