Tom Cruise hasn’t been in a relationship since he divorced Katie Holmes two years ago, but it appears an old flame is tempting him back onto the dating scene.
As revealed in this week’s Woman’s Day, newly single Sofia Vergara, who dated Tom, 51, back in 2005 following his split from Penelope Cruz, was the one who got away in Tom’s eyes!
“Back then, Tom bombarded Sofia with flowers and jewellery and swept her off her feet,” says a friend of theModern Familystar.
But Tom’s close affiliation to the Church of Scientology meant their relationship quickly fizzled, and Tom moved on with Katie just months later.
Now that Sofia, 41, is single again, after she was left heartbroken following her split from fiance Nick Loeb, Woman’s Day can reveal Tom is acting as her shoulder to cry on.
“He’s lifted Sofia’s spirits when she’s been going through a bad time,” a close friend of the Colombian actress reveals. “Tom sometimes gets a bad rap but he’s a sweet guy and very sensitive.”
Tom reconnected with Sofia after she finished filming the Australian episode of Modern Family in Sydney. And while things didn’t work out for the pair before, it appears Tom has learned from his mistakes.
“He doesn’t seem so intense and has a more relaxed view of Scientology…he really does seem to be a changed man,” says the friend.
Tom is now blitzing Sofia with texts and calls and has even offered to fly her to London to spend time with him while he promotes his new movie The Edge of Tomorrow.
“She’s told Tom that he can take her out on a date. But she’s warned him she wants to be wooed – and then some!”the friend reveals.
“Sofia wants to take her time getting to know Tom again properly. Though she’s also made it clear she won’t get involved in Scientology.”
Sofia, who has a 21-year-old son from a previous relationship, has made no secret of the fact she wants another child revealing last year that she had been seeing a fertility specialist.
She knows she is running out of time and is ready to work towards the serious relationship that can make it all happen for her.
“She’s known Tom for years, which is why she doesn’t feel like she’s starting afresh. And she gets the impression that he’d like to get married again and have more children sooner rather than later,” says a friend of the star.
“Sofia has often joked that she could have been the third Mrs Cruise instead of Katie. There’s definitely a spark.”
