Royal Doctor opens up about Prince George’s birth

Nearly one year on, Marcus Sellforth, the now-retired forner official gynaecologist to the Royal Family opens up about delivering Prince George.

In an interview on BBC Radio, Sir Marcus Sellforth, who has since received a knighthood from Prince William spoke about how he kept it together while under the scrutiny of the world’s media, as he delivered probably the most famous baby on earth.

The 70 year old said: “You just keep reminding yourself that although it’s very important, for the couple and the about-to-be-born baby, it’s just another healthy young couple giving birth to a hopefully very healthy baby.”

“And I constantly reminded myself of that so that the pressures of the hundreds of media people outside the hospital didn’t affect me, at least not more than minimally.”

Of course, as one would expect from the official Royal Doctor, he didn’t go into too many details about the birth itself – although he did hint that it may have been a slightly difficult one.

When he was asked if his presence at the birth was really necessary of if a midwife would have sufficed, Sir Marcus replied “What happened in labour is an entirely private matter.”

“But I do think that there are certain situations when someone is giving birth that it’s important not just to have a specialist sort of available at the end of a telephone, but actually in the same room to deal with anything that’s immediately going to be wrong.”

Sir Marcus, 70, has since retired from his role as Gynaecologist to the Royal Household, with the Duchess of Cambridge attending his farewell luncheon at Hyde Park earlier this year.

Since then, the Queen has made the hasty appointment of a new Surgeon Gynaecologist to the Royal family:  Drs Alan Farthing and Guy Thorpe-Beeston who also both assisted with the birth of Prince George.

The pair may be needed sooner rather than later with rumours abounding that Duchess Catherine may already be pregnant with a second child. British bookmakers this week announcing that they were suspending bets that a new Royal birth will occur this month. Wirth Prince George’s first birthday fast approaching, a new pregnancy announcement may be cause for double the cause for celebration at the Royal household next week.
