US Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps has announced his engagement to former Miss California USA Nicole Johnson.

The pair announced their news via their social media accounts. Both Michael and Nicole shared a romantic Instagram snap of the pair rolling around in the snow.

Michael, 29, captioned his image: “She said yes.”

Nicole, also 29, wrote “I’m gonna be a Mrs.”

The photos were snapped by Michael’s training partner – fellow Olympian Allison Schmitt, who also posted her own with the couple captioned, “CAN NOT BE MORE EXCITED FOR THE SOON TO BE MR & MRS PHELPS”

Michael’s sister Hilary Phelps also posted her congratulations to her Facebook page, writing: “CONGRATULATIONS to these two lovebirds on their engagement! Couldn’t be happier for my brother and thrilled to gain a sister, who I adore and love already!”

The couple first began dating in 2007 but split in 2012 before getting back together in 2014. Nicole was crowned Miss California USA in 2010.

The engagement comes as happy news for controversy-mired star. Five months earlier the 22-time Olympic medalist was suspended from the USA Swim team for six months after being charged with DUI, violating the sport’s code of conduct. This means Michael’s not swimming with the U.S. team at the world championships this year.

As well as Michael’s photo (top), Nicole and his training partner Alison shared their own happy snaps pd the couple (and Nicole’s enormous ring!) to social media.
