Cate Blanchett looked positively elated on the red carpet at the Sydney premiere of Cinderella as she confirmed the news that she and husband Andrew Upton had adopted an adorable baby girl.

“We’re besotted,” Cate said on the red carpet at the premiere of her latest film, held at Sydney’s State theatre.

Cate stars as the wicked stepmother in this latest Disney remake of the classic fairytale. Of course, she’s the opposite of that in real life though!

“There’s a lot of children out there that don’t have the good fortune of our biological children so it’s lovely to welcome a little girl,” Cate told Fairfax media.

Cate, 45 and Andrew, 49, welcomed baby Edith into their family earlier this year, with their management confirming the adoption only a week and a half ago.

As to where they adopted from? When commenting on Australia’s notoriously difficult adoption system, Cate told Fairfax: “I think it is… well I haven’t been through it here. It was in the United States.”

Cate and Andrew already have three children together. Dashiell, 13, Roman, 10 and Ignatius, six, were all conceived naturally but choosing the adoption route is only just now becoming a more common and viable option in Australia.

Cate was spotted with baby Edith at Sydney airport and on the school run with the boys in the morning.

This is thanks in no small part to Cate’s fellow antipodean actress Deborra-Lee Furness, who was this year nominated for Australian of The Year for her work campaigning for adoption rights in Australia.

Like Cate and Andrew, Deborra-Lee and her hunky husband Hugh Jackman also had to turn abroad when they adopted their children Oscar Maximillian, 14, and nine-year-old Ava Eliot. In response to their difficulties this, Deborra launched National Adoption Awareness Week in 2008 to shine a light on what Australian families are forced to deal with when trying to adopt either here or overseas.

Cate, Andrew and their three boys in Sydney back in 2008.

Cate and Andrew recently announced they would be relocating from their Sydney home to base themselves in the United States once Andrew’s term as Artistic Director at the Sydney Theatre Company is up in 2015.

“We’re all looking forward to spending more time together in one place,” Andrew told Fairfax.

“We spent nine years living in England and we loved it. But now we’d like to try America. They have terrific [opportunities in] television there and Cate has a very strong film career there, too, obviously.”

With Sydney still close to their hearts though, the move is not thought to be a permanent one as the couple plan to return.

Many congratulations to the happy couple who look positively radiant!
