Her lady-in-waiting kicked off her heels and went barefoot but the Duchess of Cambridge refused to remove her sky-high wedges to walk on Manly Beach this afternoon.

Instead, the immaculately dressed royal kept her tan Russell and Bromley heels on, negotiating the pitted sand like a pro.

Despite the uneven surface, Kate never lost her balance during the 40-minute engagement, even when she broke into a run.

William and Kate were in Manly to celebrate the work of Surf Life Saving Clubs. They watched a demonstration of various races furiously contested by 96 nippers aged 12, 13, 14 and 15 from the Queenscliff, North Steyne and Manly Surf Life Saving Clubs.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and new NSW Premier Mike Baird accompanied the royal couple on their afternoon in the sun and thousands of people turned out to welcome them to Manly.

Earlier in the day, the couple visited Bear Cottage children’s hospice, where they chatted to sick kids and met with the bereaved families of the facility’s former patients.

They began the day with a trip to Sydney’s Royal Easter Show.
