While she may be on her way to being Queen of Denmark, Princess Mary’s reigning title has become a sore point with the Danish royal family.
Princess Mary is at odds with her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe, despite their tight relationship.
Mary is starting to pull away from the grand plan that she transition into the role of the Queen of Denmark in the not-too-distant future.
While Mary is happy to take on the role, Woman’s Day understand that she has asked for more time to be with her four young children Prince Christian, 8, Princess Isabella, 7, and twins Josephine and Vincent, 3.
Sources say that Mary isn’t ready to give up her comparatively carefree life,where royal engagements are fit in around school runs.
Mary and her husband Prince Frederik, 46, have also discussed adding another child to their family before they become the king and queen of Denmark, making that their priority for the next 12 months.
The royal pair are also desperate to hold on to her care-free life that they enjoy so much.
She is already being pushed further away from her life in Australia, with a planned trip home to Australia for Christmas this year being suddenly cancelled.
For the first time since she became a royal a decade ago, Mary was excitedly planning a trip home to visit her relatives with her children, but Mary’s Australian relatives recently learned that the trip had been mysteriously cancelled by Queen Margrethe.
“We only know Mary has been forced to change plans because the Queen is up to something,” Mary’s sister-in-law Leanne Donaldson says. “We have unfortunately had to postpone and we don’t know when it will happen now.”
This isn’t the first time Mary has been pulled into line by the Danish royals. She was recently slapped on the wrist for going barefoot on the cover of the Australian Women’s Weekly.
“It is a completely wrong signal. She sits there in bare feet and looks more like a Hollywood star than a head of state”, says royal expert Jens Høvsgaard.
“If [Danish PM] Helle Thorning-Schmidt posed in this way, you would lose all respect for her and think, ‘Who the hell does she think she is?’”
