MKR’s Matt Newell tells: “I’m finally happy in love!”

Since hanging up their aprons on My Kitchen Rules last year, Tassie’s father-and-son duo Matt and Mick Newell reveal that they have each fallen head over heels in love with their own special someones.

And now, the humble home cooks turned radio presenters are spilling the beans, exclusively to Woman’s Day!

While Matt has been cooking up a romance with partner Jackson Tegg, 24, for seven months now, his father’s relationship with his lady love of ten years, Trish, 43, is flourishing.

But, it hasn’t been an easy road to happiness for Matt, who said he was “extremely nervous” when he came out to his friends and family recently.

“I’ve always had an inkling I was gay, but it wasn’t until the end of last year that I fully came to the conclusion and accepted who I was,” the 22-year-old said.

“During MKR, my sexuality wasn’t something I was prepared to talk about with other people because I was still working out who I was.”

After his TV commitments wrapped up, Matt went on a journey of self-discovery and finally decided to come out to his nearest and dearest.

“But once I knew I was gay, I didn’t want to hide it.

“It’s been seven months since I came out and I’m happier than ever!”

Though the news came as a surprise to his father Mick, 52.

“It felt like being hit with a sledgehammer,” Mick recalls.

“When I was on my own in the car, it really hit me. I couldn’t stop crying for a good ten minutes.

“But I had to think about how Matt was feeling. Sexuality does not define a person. He is an amazing kid and a decent, honest person who I am so proud of.”
