Ian Thorpe to reveal he’s gay in emotional interview

After years of public scrutiny, Australian Olympic swimming legend Ian Thorpe is set to reveal he’s gay in an emotional interview with veteran British broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson.

During the tell-all interview that will air tonight on Channel Ten, the 31-year-old reportedly confirms his sexuality for the first time.

In a preview released, Parkinson, who is known for his probing interviews, is heard asking: “You’ve always said that you’re not gay… is all of that true?”

And with gay rumours having dogged the champion swimmer since he was a young teenager,  Woman’s Day understands a courageous Ian will finally lay them to rest once and for all.

He is also set to openly discuss his long battle with depression.

In a statement released by Channel Ten, 79-year-old Parkinson said he has always wanted to interview the ‘Thorpedo’.

“Ian Thorpe has always been near the top of my list to interview,” he said.

“The reasons are obvious. Not many athletes can claim to be the best of all time. Ian can.

“The story of a boy who was a teenage World Champion, conquered the world and then seemed to give it all away is a fascinating and intriguing one.

“His fight against depression offers a unique insight into the darker side of celebrity and success. What fascinates me most about Ian is that apart from the very beginning of his career, he never seemed to enjoy and celebrate his success. It will be interesting to find out the reasons why.”

Ian Thorpe: The Parkinson Interview is sure to make for fascinating viewing and is due to air on Sunday July 13 at 6:30pm on Network TEN.
