Question

"How do I stop my nine-year-old female dog from having little accidents in her sleep? She wets her bed almost every night now."
— Bob

Answer

With age come a few awkward moments and even the odd accident, however, this is one problem with the plumbing that can be prevented. Try to think of your dog's issues as being just like a leaky tap. A problem with the valve that controls when urine comes out of the bladder means that the odd drop sneaks out when she's sleeping. So, just like fixing a tap, we need to find a way to tighten that valve and seal up the slow leak.

When she's asleep, she can't hold on, so she relies on hormones in her body to keep the valve closed. Unfortunately, as your pooch reaches pensioner age, the levels of these hormones drop away and as a result that valve sneaks open, causing the wet bed in the morning.

Hormone replacements will rectify your dog's dripping problem! And thankfully this canine HRT is easy to administer. You can choose to either add some special liquid to her food twice a day or simply give her tablets once a week. If you take care of the plumbing issues now, you can pack away the plastic sheets permanently.
