Baby boy dumped down drain to be named by his mother

The mother accused of dumping her baby boy down a storm water drain in Sydney’s North West just hours after he was born has been given the right to name him.

While the baby’s name cannot be revealed for legal reasons, News Limited has reported that the Samoan woman, who has since been charged with attempted murder, has chosen a biblical name.

Since the newborn was discovered by cyclists on Sunday morning after they heard a cry, a new picture has emerged of his miraculous rescue.

The image shows the amazing moment when the baby, still wrapped in his blue and pink hospital blanket, was pulled to safety and embraced by his rescuers six days after he had been abandoned by his mother down the 2.4-metre drain with a 200kg concrete lid covering it along the M7 motorway.

Mother charged after miracle baby survives six days in drain

The boy is said to be in a stable condition at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the 30-year-old woman “broke up with her boyfriend in the early stages of her pregnancy this year and hid it from him, as well as from her family. It is possible he never realised he was to become a father.”

“It’s shocking. We had no idea, she seemed fine. I just thought she had put on a bit of weight,” a family member told the newspaper.

It has been reported that the 30-year-old woman at the centre of the investigation has no prior criminal convictions and lives with relatives in Quakers Hill.

It has also been alleged that she has since admitted to police that she abandoned her son down the drain knowing it would kill him.

Blacktown Local Court heard that the woman “made full admissions to putting the less than 24 hour old baby down a 2.4 metre drain knowing it may kill the baby,” when being interviewed by police.

Mother of newborn baby found in Sydney drain refused bail

While the accused did not appear at the brief hearing on Monday, family members were there in support. She did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

The Magistrate also ordered the woman be medically evaluated.

The matter has been adjourned until Friday where the accused will appear via video link at Penrith Local Court.
