Mother of newborn baby found in Sydney drain refused bail

The mother accused of attempted murder after a newborn baby was found abandoned in a storm water drain in Sydney’s North West will remain behind bars after a court refused her bail.

The 30-year-old from Quakers Hill was due to appear at Blacktown Local Court this morning but she was not present.

In further developments, court documents have since revealed that the woman admitted to dumping the baby boy knowing it could kill him.

She did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

Woman’s Day understands the woman will appear via video link on Friday.

The woman was arrested and charged by police on Sunday night, just hours after the newborn was discovered down a 2.4 meter drain by cyclists who were using the cycle path along the M7 motorway and heard him cry.

The newborn’s dehydration level suggested he had been there since Tuesday with Police alleging he was placed there just 24 hours after he was born.

The boy was still wrapped in a hospital blanket when he was found. Police say the newborn would have been in great danger yesterday had he not been discovered, with temperatures in Sydney’s North West reaching 45 degrees.

The child is now in a stable condition at Westmead Children’s hospital and is being cared for by the NSW Family and Community Services Minister.
