Rolf Harris lands cushy gardening job in prison

Convicted paedophile Rolf Harris has reportedly landed the cushiest job in prison, jumping the queue ahead of other inmates.

Harris, 84, was sentenced last month, to five years and nine months in jail for sexually abusing four young girls over a period of almost 20 years.

Last week the disgraced former entertainer was reported to have been involved in a jailhouse brawl. It seems that Harris is not winning any friends in the big house, and his latest move certainly won’t help as his fellow inmates are angry that he landed the “easy” prison job of gardening after only a few weeks in prison.

All prisoners at Her Majesty’s Prison of Bullingdon in Oxfordshire are expected to work as part of their sentence. Inmates earn around £9.60 (approx. $17.40) a week for jobs such as cooking, cleaning and carpentry but the gentle outdoor job of gardening is thought to be “the plum job”. Some prisoners reportedly wait up to 12 months for the opportunity to work in the prison gardens but the fact that Harris landed the role so quickly has led to accusations of favouritism.

British newspaper The Sun quoted an inmate as saying: “Harris should be cleaning the toilets after what he did, it’s completely unfair.”

A UK Prison Service spokesperson declined to comment on Harris’ circumstances, advising that they do not comment on individuals.
