A proud Duchess Catherine has told athletes at the Commonwealth Games that she has taken Prince George swimming and that he loves nothing more than splashing around in  the water.

The Duchess was attending a reception for the charity SportsAid along with many of the Commonwealth competitors when she chatted to Commonwealth champion swimmer James Hickman.

James told theExpress Online: “She’s been swimming with him. She said he loves the water and he grabs things to splash with… “Hopefully if they can get him swimming he could be a future international swimmer.”

George’s big cousin Zara Phillips is already a highly accomplished athlete who has competed in the London Olympics as well as her many other championships. Her mother Princess Anna has also rode at the Montreal Olympics in 1976, so it’s not so far-fetched to think that there may be another royal athlete in the family!

If Prince William is anything to go by though, it sounds like energetic young George has got a way to go before refining his swimming strokes. William told the Royal British Sub Aqua Club quite recently that “at the moment, bath-time is quite painful”. No doubt this is because fidgety young George is too busy splashing around and enjoying himself!

We all saw Prince George crawling on the Royal tour, then we saw him walking in his official First Birthday portrait, could the one year old take to swimming next?

Commonwealth champion swimmer James Hickman said that he spoke with Duchess Catherine at a reception for the charity SportsAid.

James said “She’s been swimming with him. She said he loves the water and he grabs things to splash with.”

Prince William is a fan of the water too, having recently given a swimming demonstration at the Royal British Sub-Aqua Club in London.

Prince William said that he hoped Prince George would become an enthusiastic diver and swimmer like him one day, but that “at the moment, bath time is quite painful” – no doubt because young George loves splashing around so much!

Duchess Catherine got into the spirit of things at the games, participating in the traditional South African game of “three tins” at the athletes village.

George’s uncle Prince Harry and Prince William got all sporty at the Games too as they jostled each other for the ball in a friendly game of soccer at a local Glaswegian athletic centre.

Now that we’ve seen Prince George powering around on those little legs, perhaps the next thing we’ll see is him swimming at full speed in the pool!
